mng.ie meets West Donegal B&B's - Logues Kincasslagh

Moira Ní Ghallachóir March 29, 2013

Logues B&B is a very traditional and authentic B&B run by two wonderfully friendly and welcoming people Mary and Dermot Logue. They are a great example of that old saying, "get the basics right and everything else will follow". Logues do just that with a warm welcome, a comfortable bed, home made bread and guests keep coming back year after year.

In business since 2000 Mary and Dermot have had guests from all over the world. Their visitors book paints a worldly picture. Entries from Sardinia to Russia, South Africa to Canada, Israel to Lithuania, they have all passed through Kincasslagh and stayed at Logues b&b.

The view from this delightful place is second to none, you can see all the islands including Aranmore, Owey, Cruit, even Tory lighthouse and Bloody Foreland. Just beautiful. The Logues have built and depended on their own reputation and this has been their vessel to a successful family run business throughout the years and many more to come. Guests who come to Logues, especially enjoy the Earagail Arts festival, Glenveagh Castle, Aranmore Island. Local entertainment includes Mary from Dungloe and the Frankie Kennedy Winter school. They say that guests have often come for just two nights, but would extend night after night to be part of local events and if the weather was particularly nice, they would indeed find it very hard to leave. With Dermot Logue himself being an ex fisherman, his local knowledge will keep you well entertained and ensure you get the most out of what the area has to offer. Whether you are a walker or a swimmer, if its fishing or if you just appreciate the out doors. You’ll get it here. Logues is busy all year round, with the odd quiet period. They have some vacancies around the 13th of July, for when Abhaile - The Homecoming concert with Clannad and Altan at Donegal airport. So if you are looking for a real Donegal experience look no further than this delightful b & b. Email loguers@yahoo.com

Errigal Hostel Dunlewy - Do we realise how amazing this place is?

Moira Ní Ghallachóir March 18, 2013

mng.ie visited the Errigal Hostel last week, and met with Andrea, the manager of the hostel. Andrea kindly took some time out to have a chat and show us around. What a truly magnificent spot. Driving by so many times, but never actually stopping to get a closer look at this mighty 5* hostel, we were well impressed!

The view out each window, was nothing short of stunning, being at the foot of Errigal mountain and opposite the Poison Glen. This hostel can sleep 60. They have a range of rooms, doubles, twins and family rooms with mezzanine layout. Particularly appreciated the use of space, spacious yet minimal but rather cosy and cool too.

The artwork on the walls, was also very impressive, hosting works from local artists such as Ian Gordon and Caitriona Quill, it was hard not to stop and stare.

Andrea herself was keen to talk about the hostel and who they expect to host in 2013, with Germany featuring often, the hostel finds that August are the busiest times for them. A feature not to overlook is the fact that Errigal Hostel prides themselves on being Green Green Green and has been awarded The EU ECO Flower for their commitment to sustainable tourism and protection of the local environment. Well done indeed!

This is a great spot for any visitors coming to Donegal’s Gaeltacht between march and October, and especially for Abhaile – The Homecoming, on the 13th July.

Andrea, herself a longtime Clannad and Altan fan, has her ticket already “I wasn’t going to wait till the last minute” she said, and will be joined by a group of friends from down the country, also fans, for the historic event and Donegal Airport. Great to hear these crowds gathering together for this!

Errigal hostel is open from 1st March to 31st October, lets spread the word, this place is fantastic.

Limekiln House B&B - Bookings for Abhaile concert and many enquiries already

Moira Ní Ghallachóir February 18, 2013

Limekiln house Carrickfinn, sits in a stunning spot, just past Donegal airrport over the cattle grid, this lovely family business has been welcoming tourists from all over the world for 20 years and is it any wonder.

A warm welcome, hot pot of tea and a basket of homemade goodies made by Rosemary Boyd, awaits you at Limekiln house, with her skills in cake decorating and biscuit making often making the newspaper, you can just imagine the delights that await here, and we hear her guests just love it.

The surrounding area is a walkers and artists paradise, and so close to the airport too, guests are often flying enthusiasts or parents of children at one of the many local Gaeltacht colleges.

Their visitors book has entries from all over the world, particularly, Italy, Germany and France to name only a few.

One guest has written 'Home was never like this!' A German couple who visit annually and sometimes twice a year since 1999 welcomed in the Millennium in Limekiln House. After joining the family for a New Year's Eve dinner they all walked along the shore to welcome in the dawn of a new millennium.

On the 13th of July perhaps the Dutch pair who have booked Limekiln house will have a similar experience and walk along the shore to Donegal airport to enjoy this historical event, Abhaile - The Homecoming with Clannad and Altan, a key flagship event for Donegal gathering.

We are sure that Limekiln house will be booked out, best get booking!!
